The daintier the foot, the more marriageable the girl
Bound by tradition, Su-Ling’s world is closing in around her. Her grandmother is determined that she will marry well and bring prosperity to them both. But when she learns to read, Su-Ling’s mind is opened to new possibilities, setting her on a dangerous path to independence.

Audience considerations: Some violence and mature subject matter. Recommended age: 15+

Gateway Forum (Forum 1pm, Show 2pm) – Explore the themes and ideas related to our MainStage shows through a discussion with our Artistic Team. (Free public event, no tickets required)

  • Dangerous Books: When Reading is Seen as a Subversive Act – At certain points in history, reading has been considered rebellious or even dangerous; why is that? Why are some books banned, and by whom? What is the power in reading that makes some people thirsty for knowledge and others anxious to censor it? Moderator: Barbara Tomasic, Gateway Theatre’s Interim Producer.

Opening Night – Stay for a celebratory reception after the Opening Night show and mingle with the talented artists.

Pizza Preview (Pizza 7pm, Show 8pm) – Enjoy a free slice of pizza before our Thursday Preview Show courtesy of Boston Pizza Ackroyd.

Talkback – Meet the cast and creative team after the show for a fun Q&A session in an intimate setting.

Tea Matinee (Tea 12pm, Show 1pm) – Meet with friends, discuss shows, and enjoy tea and cake before the Tuesday Matinee courtesy of Anna's Cake House and Gilmore & Courtyard Gardens.

Wine Wednesday (Tasting 7pm, Show 8pm) – Join us for a complimentary pre-show wine tasting, presented by a local Richmond family winery. (Ages 19+)
