GATEWAY THEATRE: MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Looking for professional theatre production experience during your training? Are you an emerging artist?

Gateway Theatre Mentorship Program gives four student / emerging production artists the opportunity to work in a professional theatre environment in three separate roles, alongside established mentoring theatre artists.

Successful candidates will be mentored through the rehearsal and production process of our second MainStage production in our 2018/19 season, It’s a Wonderful Life, adapted by Peter Jorgensen, arrangements and orchestration by Nico Rhodes. They will assist in production of the show, during pre-production, rehearsal, technical rehearsals, and post-production phases.

Overview of 2018 Schedule:

Oct 29 - Nov 3 Pre-production
Nov 4 - 23 Rehearsals
Nov 24 - Dec 6 Tech rehearsals
Dec 7 - 31    Performances
Jan 2 - 5, 2019  Post-production

In addition, they will participate in two workshops:

1. Personal Branding taught by Patrick McAndless, Career Development Guest Lecturer
2. Production taught by Josef Chung, Production Manager, Gateway Theatre

All apprentices will, based on their interests and aptitudes have opportunities to observe work of professional artists, artisans and craftspeople as well as the production process.  Examples include:

  • Scenic Construction and Art
  • Properties construction and coordination
  • Costume construction, coordination, dressing, hair, makeup
  • Lighting and sound
  • Administration/coordination of production support, buying, production meetings
  • Show cue calling

Apprentice positions:

  • Two Apprentice Stage Managers (ApSM)
    • Nov 1, 2018 to Dec 31, 2018
    • Hours required: 6 days/wk (rehearsal and performance schedule)
    • ApSMs will learn two separate tracks for the production, as well as experience some show time in the booth to shadow the SM and/or ASM.
    • Apprentices will learn and practice:
      • Preparing show paperwork such as costume plots,  prompt scripts, reports and minutes
      • Coordinating schedules
      • Facilitating backstage tracks such as entrances/exits and deck cues
      • Rehearsal Hall setup, taping and drawing reading
  • One Apprentice Production Assistant
    • Nov 1, 2018 to Jan 5, 2019
    • Hours required: 20-35 / week (hours cut back after opening)
    • Assist the Production Manager and Technical Director
    • Drive company van
    • Four days strike and restore
    • Apprentices will learn and practice:
      • Purchasing, sourcing and buying
      • Production schedule coordination
      • Rehearsal Hall setup, taping and drawing reading
      • Preparing meeting minutes
  • One Apprentice Technical Director
    • Nov 1, 2018 to Jan 5, 2019
    • Hours required: 20-35 / week (hours cut back after opening)
    • Assist the Technical Director
    • Drive company Van
    • Four days strike and restore
    • Apprentices will learn and practice:
      • Design analysis: costing and specification of equipment and supplies
      • Crew scheduling
      • Rehearsal Hall setup, taping and drawing reading
      • Preparing meeting minutes

In some cases, other school commitments can be accommodated. Accreditation arrangements can be made. An honorarium of $500-$750 will be provided, depending on the position.

Applicant Criteria:

  • age 18 to 35
  • Are currently training or are in the early stages of their theatre career
  • Demonstrate a commitment to devoting more time to their artistic activity
  • Devote a minimum of 24 hours per week to their art
