History of Paper Theatre

As more and more of our time is spent online, we wanted to create a hands-on way for Gateway families to bond over the magic of performing arts. By assembling your Hallows’ Eve paper theatre kit, you’ll be taking part in a long tradition of miniature theatre dating back to the early 19th Century!

Two photos, one featuring an illustration of a field with pumpkins, black trees and purple fields, the other of a woman with brown hair pointing at her concept art that is posted all about her wall.As early as 1810, replicas of popular plays were sold as kits that people assembled at home, including the stage, scenery, performers and costumes. As they were modelled after real theatres and performers, these antique kits now provide historians an accurate look at the theatre world of the past. To add our own spin to the tradition, our kits were developed by Keely O’Brien using ink, watercolour, and printmaking, making each a beautiful piece of artwork as well as a tool for imaginative play. Our Hallows’ Eve paper theatre kit is in a very limited print – order yours today to bring the magic of theatre home!
